"WE ARE A NON-PROFIT. We are not a business!" As someone who has served as a board member, adviser, and donor for nonprofits, I’ve heard a version of this sentiment more times than I can count.
100% agree. I work for a UK charity and we are definitely in business - just a "for impact" business rather than a "for profit" one. "Non-profit" is such a negative way to view an organisation's work and objectives.
Nonprofits, and especially their boards, have a fiduciary responsibility to utilize the organizations' funds as intended and according to their mission. This certainly requires business savvy and good strategic planning.
